Gil Hibben And Paul Ehlers Collaboration The Gremlin Push Dagger - January 10, 2020
MOULTRIE, Ga. – From the hands of legendary, master knifemaker Gil Hibben and the mind of fantasy weapon designer and actor Paul W. Ehlers comes, “The Gremlin,” the first featured collaboration from United Cutlery’s Hibben/Ehlers Classics’ edged weapons collection. The Gremlin Push Dagger pushes the envelope of design in this radical interpretation of the historic discreet blade. First designed by Paul Ehlers, in 1984, and brought to life through the steel sculpting hands of Gil Hibben, the Gremlin now breathes again in this momentous new production knife from United Cutlery. The completely unique push dagger has a full-tang, premium stainless steel blade with four razor-sharp edges and a penetrating point and the handle scales are black linen Micarta with a finger-grooved grip.
Hibben and Ehlers met, in 1983, when Ehlers placed an order with Hibben for a custom survival bowie. During the exchange, he mentioned to Hibben that he sometimes drew knives and the knifemaker responded with, “Love to see one.” After Ehlers sent the requested drawing to Hibben, he inquired about what he thought of it and Hibben responded with, “I already made it and sold it!” And, as they say, “the rest is history.”
Hibben, who was always looking for a challenge, was not daunted by Ehler’s “wild” knife designs and the two began a 33-year collaboration, presenting the world with more than 40 new creations. Ehlers believes that a large part of his inspirations for his knife designs are based on the fact that he doesn’t physically make them.
In the beginning, not knowing the extreme difficulty of cutting them out and grinding them, he said, “That, left my mind open to create”. “If I knew then, what I know now, it is possible my concepts may have been restricted by the ‘impossible’ factor.”
In 1984, legendary knife photographer, Jim Weyer, took a liking to the work Hibben and Ehlers were creating. He guided Ehlers around a knife show introducing him to people as, “the next Bud Cronk”. Ehlers had never seen the work of this fantasy knife pioneer and upon finally seeing Cronk’s “mind blowing” creations, he said he was stunned.
“I had no words. Mr. Cronk’s creations were some of the most amazing art pieces ever made…what a mind,” Ehlers said.
He said that he regrets not having met the “Father of Fantasy Knives” but strives, with Hibben, to continue to carry the torch that “Bud” lit. Over the years, Hibben and Ehlers have received accolades from all around the world.
One, that stands out to them, was made by concert pianist, art and Hibben/Ehlers knife collector, Emile Buzaid, “I have been to the museums and armories throughout the world. I have never seen knives like these…they are unique!”
