I've only had my staff for a couple of weeks, and I must say I simply love it. Its strong, durable, hard hitting. When my buddy first saw it he fell in love with it. This staff is great and the price is so awesome. Thanks budk for a great price and even greater product. My purchases from budk don't end here.

6' Wax Wood Staff

Reviewed By: William Haynes (Tucson,  AZ)
This was one of the items I purchased on my first order when I became a member. The one I received was a little tapered, and was hoping I could stain and varnish it which from what I read from other owners I can. Overall I love the product, and not sure of it's martial arts use as I have not practiced with it yet.

This is the best staff that I have bought. It can take a beating even from the most stressful martial arts training. Able to block anything from another staff to a sword. Way to go budk! :)

why

Reviewed By: Dalton Champion (Pearland,  TX)
For people who are complaining about the flexibility of this weapon, don't know about weapons at all. Wax wood staffs are used for their shock absorbency which gives them a whipping like advantage, like a hard whip. So the flexibility is doing its JOB that's the point of a wax wood staff. Thanks BUDK for making a historically accurate bo staff.

held up to staff training and a 8 mnth hike

Reviewed By: thomas gosselin (Matthews,  NC)
I took this with me from pisgah national forest to durahm nc up to allegany national forest pa. all along the way I trained with it in fire air and dragon style. I also doubled it as a walking stick. Didn't splinter warp split or break in any way. Held up like a champ. buying another bc I gave mine to a friend I met along the way who helped me out more than words can say. But recommendation is if your looking for a perfect balance exactly straight unrealistic staff not for u. But if your looking for a h*** of a good staff that will prep u for makeshift staffs in real scenarios or a walking stick buy this lacquer it and be glad u did, can't promote this staff enough. I would also suggest for added strength tack on brass tips about 4 2 5 inches in length with 1/4 in over hang folded down into base. Adds style weights the ends more for balance and makes the ends practically impossible to split, no matter how much abuse. I'm proof. Editor's Note: Thank you for your comments. We have updated the review to refl

waxwood

Reviewed By: bfam008 (rantoul,  IL)
Just an fyi, and not trying to start anything, wax wood is actually a relative newcomer to the staff world. It has been used widely for centuries as mainly polearm material. Primarily for its ability to take a forward blow and respond by bending not breaking or shattering. Rattan or bamboo were the primary woods used for staff in the early days because of the "whip" potential they have. This provides a much harder snapping strike. As far as use for a walking stick, they all have been used and are still used in the east. In the shogun period all weapons were outlawed so the common man used what was available, such as walking staff, nunchaku (used originally for threshing rice), kama (a hand sickle, and used for spicketting pigs), etc.

Purpose

Reviewed By: Jason Armbruster (Appleton,  WI)
I have yet to purchase this item but my friend has the exact one. mine will be here shortly. I would like to remind everyone who has bought and will buy this item. That it IS WAX WOOD, just like ritan and bamboo it IS meant to have a bend to it, it is a BOW STAFF not a regular staff. for a hard non bending staff i suggest the ninja staff BUDK also offers. This is the type of staff you'd see in asian martial arts movies. very good very durable, excellent for martial arts. Personally i think it's disrespectful to use such an object for hiking, that's what walking and hiking sticks are for but that IS my personal opinion. enjoy. Yeah had it for 2 months or longer can't remember. This staff doesn't like cold >_> snapped when I swung it and it hit the ground, I believe it was -5 degrees or so might of just be a manufacturing defect or I swung to hard but whatever still need to buy a new one.

The 6 Foot Wax Wood Staff

Reviewed By: Frank Vozenilek (Cedar Rapids,  IA)
I came to the Bud K site tonight PURPOSELY to buy two WAX WOOD STAFFS. I haven't yet made my purchase, as out of habit, I've "stopped to read" - read the reviews. Something I always do and is USUALLY NEVER NECESSARY WITH BUD K PRODUCTS! But as I said. It's habit, and I'm glad I did this time. I am SO PLEASED Mr. Jason Armbruster, (Appleton, WI) wrote such a wonderful review! A WAX WOOD STAFF IS NOT a walking stick, although many martial artisits who CHOSE the staff used it as a walking stick of sorts (more a disguise of the staff's true purpose). And his further exact comments. As a martial artist since 1970 (Tang Su Do and Shoto Kahn)the weapons ARE NOT toys nor are they, "poorly made" walkin' sticks. Wax wood staffs are NOT meant to be CHOPPED into eschrema sticks (which can be purchased or built cheaply), nor turned into spear shafts. Spears actually used a different wood(s) altogether.

Solid Sturdy and Reliable

This staff is great. Inexpensive and top quality with a couple knots. Surface is uniform and makes a great walking/hiking stick. Oiled mine up with Macadamia and JoJoba Oils to bring out the depth of the grain. Ready to be carved or modified by ambitious weaponsmiths. Get one and you will be satisfied 100 percent.

I received a wax wood staff that was excellent as a walking stick but will require a great deal of work to balance it properly as a fighting weapon. One end of the staff is much heavier than the other.

6 Foot Wax Wood Staff

Reviewed By: Robert Matthews (Ruffs Dale,  PA)
Good solid staff. Its nice because it has a little flexibility to it but can take alot of abuse. I didn't like how its tapered, its definitely lopsided. not good for a competition piece, but a nice walking stick or weapon, but doesn't handle like a good balance staff, but could be made to with relative ease.
