Actually, it's not supposed to come with a battery, and having the tang all the way to where it carries the fishing stuff is pretty dang good, considering the stuff works.

I got this knife about four weeks ago and i have to say i love it.The knife comes sharp out of the box. The blade of the knife is huge and I would say you could probably go bear hunting with this knife cause it's really that big. The survival gear it comes with works great and the saw back could easily cut down some medium size trees. The animal snare is good quality and the snake bite kit is good to. I'm not sure how the G.I can opener works but if I were stuck in the wild I'm pretty sure I could figure out how to use it. The sharpening stone is course at first but I put some REM oil on it and used a different knife with it and now it's smooth. The flashlight is ok but not the best and the matches don't work so I replaced them with flint. Everything else on the knife is in good condition so I have to say 5/5 stars on this knife. If you want a good quality survival knife for a good price this would be the knife to buy!

I just got my United Cutlery BushMaster Survival Knife in from UPS this morning. THe shipping was fast as lightning. I ordered this on the 17th and today is the 20th! WOW! The first thing I noticed was the packaging, very professional on BudK's part. I was pleased. The knife had a very good edge to it, I haven't field tested yet but I have chopped a small tree down so far and it worked wonderful. I did find that I liked the knife better without the handgaurd but that's just a preference. The thing's it came with was awesome and all good quality. the only thing that differed was it was suppose to come with a spare battery for the flashlight but didn't which is no big deal at all. just a missadd. I really like the fishing line and fishing thing's it came with. those would come in handy and is very light weight. I thought the knife would be small but it's not at all small. weighty but very handy to have. the back saw on the blade work's good to and it also came with a good edge for 440 SS. I highly reccomend this knife to any new outdoorsmen. It could also be used for a deer skinning knife or a fishing knife. I'll post how good on skinning catfish it is later :) I give this knife 5/5 Stars!

Best of the Biggest

If you want a decent survival knife without breaking the bank, this is for you. The blade is heavy, comes sharpened fairly well, and even the typically redundant saw-teeth have a good edge on them. I am by no means a small person, so this knife works well for me. It may be a bit too big for others. The handle and handguard are METAL. Yes, it adds to weight, but it's not going to be as prone to cracking during lateral blade movement as a plastic/kydex/playdoh/etc handle would be. Also, the tang appears to go halfway through the handle, right up to the hollow for the fishing gear. There is a small hole through the side of the handle that looks to be part of the mounting of the handle to the blade, however, it is the same diameter as the cordage that attaches the sheath to your leg, and could be used for lashing the knife to a pole for use as a spear. The knuckle guard is metal and is removable by unscrewing the compass pommel, sliding the bottom of the guard to one side, and then sliding the guard down the blade. Good construction on this point...the guard won't come off unless you want it to. The compass actually works and the housing is all metal. Weighty, but it won't break from side impacts. The 180 degree azimuth on the side of the blade is actually carved/lasered/nibbled in, not just painted on. In the handle is a sealable tube. Inside that are a couple of fishing hooks, weights, a bit of line, matches, and a spare scalpel blade in antiseptic packaging. On the side of the tube is a listing of the alphabet in morse code. The sheath is a kydex scabbard inside of nylon, can be worn on the belt, and can be fastened to the thigh with the provided cord or, you can replace the cord with paracord/shoelaces/etc. At this point, the knife "might" be worth the price, but it's the extras that more than cover the cost. I just received my Bushmaster Survival Knife and I have to tell you, this is one of the best survival knives I have ever bought from BUDK or any other outlet out there. When I removed it from the box, I found it to be exactly what it was advertised as. The knife was sharp, durable and had a really nice sheath and storage compartments. The only thing that I would probably change about this knife is the flashlight that comes with this knife. The flashlight doesn't shine very well. At first I thought it was the battery but I tried several new ones and it just doesn't live up to expectations. This is a great buy. Just need to equip with a better flashlight.

This is an Excellent knife. Razor sharp edge right out of the box and a fine point. I love the blade on the top of the blade as well. However, I wouldn't recommend hacking with it as it is not full tang. Also recommend replacing the flashlight.

Great Blade...but

Reviewed By: bertj3 (Crane,  TX)
I just got done chopping some annoying low branches on my pecan tree and the blade held up great and is still super sharp. The only negative remark I have to say about it is that the hand guard doesn't allow the compass to screw tightly into the handle, which makes the compass pop off while you are swinging the knife. I took off the hand guard and that solved the problem. For the price, this is is a great buy.

I like the knife good construction and balanced well. The flashlight was cheap. I will replace it with a better one and the matches that come with it are not strike anywhere which makes them useless. It would be better with a magnesium flint striker which i replaced the matches with. All in all though a good knife sharp out of the box and everything else in the survival kit seemed to be of fair to good quality. Editor's Note: Thank you for your comments.
